Background of the Study
Gender diversity in education has become an important issue in many fields, including nursing. Traditionally, nursing has been viewed as a predominantly female profession, but over the years, there has been a noticeable increase in male participation. Gender diversity in nursing education can have profound effects on students' learning experiences, as it introduces a wider range of perspectives and fosters an inclusive environment (Abiola et al., 2023). This diverse setting not only challenges gender stereotypes but also encourages collaboration, which is crucial in healthcare settings where teamwork is essential.
In Taraba State University, the nursing department has seen an increase in the number of male nursing students, though they still represent a minority. This study aims to examine the effect of gender diversity on the learning experiences of nursing students at the university. Research has shown that gender diversity in educational settings leads to improved communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities among students (Adeoye et al., 2023). Furthermore, it has been suggested that the inclusion of both genders may alter teaching dynamics, with male students offering different insights into clinical and theoretical discussions, thereby enhancing the overall learning experience for all students. However, there is limited research on how gender diversity in nursing education specifically impacts students' experiences in Taraba State University, making this study necessary.
Statement of the Problem
While gender diversity has the potential to positively influence the learning environment in nursing education, there is little research on how it specifically impacts the learning experiences of nursing students at Taraba State University. Understanding how male and female students perceive their educational experiences in a gender-diverse environment could inform strategies for creating a more inclusive and effective educational framework in the nursing department.
